With half the squad being U13, and one player still U12, this is a great building block for next year. Although the squad was a little bit unbalanced, with seven shooters and only one defence, the players adapted well when asked to play in new positions.
Lauren was a great captain and really led the team from the start. Despite being a shooter, she played mainly in centre court where her strength, vision and superb pass were a great asset to the team. She was joined in centre court by Emma, Shannon and Grace who also all filled in to the defence circle when needed. Emma is very calm on court and her experience playing in the senior 4th team was evident. Shannon is very determined and ball hungry, going for every available interception. Grace has great speed through the court and is strong at turning defence into attack.
Jemma was another shooter who played mainly in the centre court and despite being the youngest member of the squad, showed a great attitude and mature game play. Holly joined the squad halfway through the season and was also comfortable in both the shooting circle and centre court.
Pia, Fern and Paige were the main shooting combination, and each of them brought something different to the circle. Pia is a quiet player, who goes to good spaces on the court and has a lovely fluid shot. Fern is very athletic, with strong drives into the circle, and her shot has become more solid this season. Paige really grew and improved throughout the season and, as she got to grips with a new shooting style, became more and more accurate, having the top shooting stats.
In defence, Mollie (also originally a shooter), really took on the mantle of a defensive player and formed a strong partnership in the circle with Sadie. She really adapted well to the change and showed great heart, and enthusiasm to learn this new position, with a really noticeable improvement from the beginning to the end of the season.
The player of the year for the U14 squad was Sadie. She puts a huge amount of hard work into both training and games, and was the only defensive player in the squad at the start of the year. She has grown into a terrific player, and is always encouraging to the rest of the squad. Her reading of the game has improved tremendously, she really commits to the interceptions and she brings the ball out of defence and up the court strongly.
The team was placed third in the league, behind Telstars and CFX. A great achievement, as these teams went on to be placed 6th and 3rd respectively at the National Finals. The squad was missing a few players for the regional tournament , which was the qualifier for the Nationals, however they worked hard, and with the addition of Aneira for the first time, they gained valuable experience for next year.
